To end Summer 2022, MAF's Oʻahu, Hilo, and Ka'ū students led in-person programming with haumāna.
On O'ahu, MAF partnered with Pālama Settlement to provide gardening summer activities. Haumāna in grades K-6 participated in lessons about the Native Hawaiian ecosystem through arts and crafts, while working in the māla. Mālama ʻĀina staff also assisted in a field trip to Ka Papa Lo‘i O Kānewai.
Our Hilo program led two summer session classes at Hilo Intermediate: Māla Kupono and Wai Wai. The Māla Kupono class learned about natural farming and conducted multiple investigations regarding the growth of plants. The Wai Wai class took place both online and in-person, providing haumāna with the chance to learn about the Native Hawaiian ecosystem on Hawaiʻi Island. Our Hilo program also led supplemental STEAM lessons for the ‘Ike Kai summer program in collaboration with Richardson Ocean Center and Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium.
In Kāʻu, we partnered with the Parks and Recreations Department of Naʻalehu and Pahala, to assist them with their Summer Fun program. We shared hands-on learning experiences with students in grades K-5. Haumāna learned about the Native Hawaiian ecosystem through games, reading, coloring pages, and planting.
