At the end of the Fall 2022 session, MAF’s Oʻahu and Hilo students led place-based programming with haumāna.

On Oʻahu, Kamaile Academy students visited Hoʻokuaʻāina and practiced mālama ʻāina by working in the loʻi and cleaning kalo. Afterward, they celebrated their hard work with a mud-race (many students said that this was their favorite part).

Our Hilo program assisted Hui Hoʻ'oleimaluō in building a hale kiaʻ'i for Kaumaui Loko Iʻa in Keaukaha. On day 1, students learned about ʻūpaʻa lashing and how to bundle kaula. On day 2, students learned how to debark waiawī, and build A-frames for the ‘oloke‘a. Then for day 3, students erected the ‘oloke‘a, which the hale was built around.

In Nā‘ālehu, Mālama 'Āina staff partnered with Nāʻālehu Elementary to provide a STEAM day for haumāna in grades 1-6. The variety of activities tied together Native Hawaiian culture and scientific concepts around the theme of ahupua‘a. Staff also assisted Ka Pa'alana with their activities for the Kindergarten and pre-school students.
