To begin 2021, Mālama ʻĀina Foundation staff participated in a three-day training on Trauma-Informed Care led by Director of Operations Danny Goya.

Trauma-Informed Care (“TIC”) is a framework that involves understanding and recognizing the impact of traumatic experiences on an individual, and how to appropriately respond and provide service to those with histories of trauma. TIC also acknowledges that everyone, regardless of background, has likely experienced some instance of trauma that will affect their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors going forward.

Familiarity with TIC is an essential skill for our staff to carry out the foundation’s mission of providing culturally-rooted education and support to students and families in underserved communities. The TIC framework allows our staff in community-facing roles to better understand and respond to our program participants of various backgrounds and experiences, and provide them with the resources and support needed.
