Mahope Hoʻokuaʻāina Field Trip: September 13, 2019

On September 13, our Kamaile Academy Mahope program participants had the opportunity to visit Hoʻokuaʻāina and work in the loʻi. The haumāna (students) learned about Oʻahu’s traditional moku, ahupuaʻa, and ʻili land divisions, along with the story of Hāloa and the Hawaiian people’s ties to kalo as an ancestor. After requesting permission to enter the loʻi with their Kamaile Academy oli komo (entrance chant), the haumāna jumped into the mud to help Hoʻokuaʻāina staff prepare a patch to be replanted with kalo.
