Laupāhoehoe CPCS – Hawai‘i Island – Field Day – Waipi‘o Valley: May 26, 2016
Educational Coordinator Mr. Aaron Mickelson conducted the last field day of the school year with his Mahope students and guests. The visit to Waipio Valley was the culmination of the lessons covered throughout the school year and in particular the fourth quarter. The students and staff were welcomed and introduced to Waipi‘o Valley by Ms. Kūlia Tolentino-Potter (Founder/Volunteer Program Director) of Pōhāhā I Ka Lani. Ms.Tolentino-Potter provided instruction for land preparation, kalo cultivation, and plant identification. Under direction, the students set about cleaning and weeding kalo patches followed by harvesting kalo lau (leaves) and huli (kalo shoots) for replanting.
