Kawaikini Charter School 4/1-4/2/2015

The second delivery of our loko i‘a lessons were with Kawaikini Charter School on Kaua‘i as we continued the lessons with our Waipā ‘ohana in Hanalei. The engineering lessons had the kids planning, drawing and executing two separate structures. One fish trap and one stand alone structure that was able to hold and support one of the students for at least 60 seconds. The fish trap was built using surrounding materials and a limited amount of raffia to bind it all together. The structures had to be built well enough to stay overnight in the stream, so that the next day when we met for day 2, we could check and see if the trap had caught fish!

Considering the difficulty of the task, the limited amount of resources and time the kids did a great job and their engineering knowledge was evident in their structures. They also got to try their hand at throwing net. Some of the fisherkids of the group taught their classmates how to throw net correctly and even brought some nets from home to share!

The kids worked extremely hard on their projects even working through some rain and heavy wind. It was fun to get dirty with the kids for this delivery and we look forward to the next!
