Kamaile Academy – Wai‘anae - O‘ahu – Field Day: July 6, 2016
The students studied the concepts and designs of canoe construction and how it relates toward design, function, seaworthiness, and carrying capacity. The students were tasked with designing their own canoes taking into consideration the elements illustrated within their studies. Throughout the designing and construction period of the canoes the student were aware of weight (student), size, and buoyancy constraints. In turn, each team’s creation was tested with a pilot as part of time-trials which included buoyancy (longevity) that took place at Poka‘i Bay in Wai‘anae.
