Jarrett Middle School and the YMCA – December 29th 2015

The Mahope program invited Jarrett MS (Palolo Valley, O‘ahu) and the YMCA (Kalihi, O‘ahu) to partake in the program’s Food Science delivery. The students were treated to a demonstration of traditional Hawaiian skills, techniques, and food preparation by cultural practitioner Mr. Aaron Mahi. In addition, the students were introduced to edible chemical processes/reactions through hands-on activities such as the molecular egg and accompanying dressings. The students took part in a blending of Hawaiian and Western food items and practices. Most notably, was the hand pounded kalo that was used to create kalo pizzas. Lastly, the students were introduced to sustainable and organic foods through vegan cooking demonstrations by Chef Mama T in association with Down to Earth.
