At the end the year of 2022, MAF’s Oʻahu, Hilo, and Kohala staff led place-based programming with haumāna.

On Oʻahu, Kamaile Academy haumāna learned about the history and science of heʻe nalu (surfing). We were fortunate enough to partner with a local surf school, and allow participants to experience surfing for the first time.

For the Hilo haumāna, they visited Hawaiʻi Volcanos National Park and harvested native mea kanu (plants) to be made into wreaths. Participants took their creations home to share with their ʻohana.

In Kohala, our Mahope program held their first ever ʻohana night! Haumāna gathered with their ʻohana to share all they had learned thus far and watch the film, Waterman, a documentary focused on the life and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku.
