To wrap up the 2022 school year, MAF's Oʻahu, Hilo, and Ka'ū sites led huakaʻi (field trips) to reinforce lessons from the year. These sites also hosted hōʻike to allow students to reflect on their experiences and share lessons with their ʻohana.

On Oʻahu, haumāna participated in a week of field trips. They focused on ecosystems and how they work together as a community in nature. On the last day, all of the students did presentations for their parents and classmates.

Haumāna in Hilo shared about waʻa, the native Hawaiian canoe used for voyaging. They particularly highlighted experiences building and testing model canoes. Students also mentioned how the afterschool program brought them closer as an ohana.

Mountain View Farms has been an extraordinary partner in providing students a platform to learn about the māla. The farm boxes have thrived at Hilo Intermediate. Tomatoes, lettuce, and green onion have grown in a short period of time. Students learned about each vegetable and fruit as they were harvested. At the same time, they learned some healthy recipes using produce grown in their māla.

In Kʻaʻū,  haumāna did an activity with hula hoops. They accomplished their goal by simulating an environment where native plants and animals work together to survive. In this ecosystem, they learned how iʻiwi birds drink ohia lehua nectar to spread pollen to the trees.
